Breaking Camp

Now Sue and I head home. Up I-17 toward Flaqgstaff and basically follow Route 66 home.

We are do to arrive in Cincinnati around midnight Sunday night at the end of our 1,800 mile drive.

We'll be in the stands opening day.

Be sure to follow me on www/redsseasonticket.blogspot.com starting Wednesday.

As Mel Allen used to say. "So long until tomorrow."

Indians Ambush Reds But the Reds Rally to Tie 10-10

Either the Reds are sandbagging for the regular season Ohio Cup or the Cleveland Indians have their number.

In the the Cactus League finale the Indians are 5-0 coming into today and lead 5-2 after five innings.

Homer Bailey, who will make the opening day roster for the first time, gave up a two-run, first inning home run to Lonnie Chisenhall.

The Reds tied it with RBI singles by Brandon Phillips and Ramon Hernandez.

Catcher Mike Redmond hit a three-run double when Bailey misplaced his control in the fourth inning. He walked Jhonny Peralta allowed a two-out single to Matt LaPorta and hit luis Valbuena in the right hand to load the bases. Valbuena had to leave the game.

Bailey is pitching into the sixth inning for the first time this spring.

Bailey is looking forward to going to Cincinnati

"It's the first time I can say I'm ready to go to Cincinnati. There's not a lot to do in the desert. I had a so-so spring but it was good to get a lot of work in. I saw some positives and some negatives but they'll be ironed out."

Logan Ondrusek was not scored on in 10 innings.

He made the team as a long shot.

"He came up through the organization last year and dominated at every level. He is a real pro for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience."

"It is a dream come true," Ondrusek said. "Ever since I started playing ball when I was young it was a dream to be in the big leagues. Now its reality."

The Reds trailed by three in the 9th inning but minor leaguer Denis Phipps hit a two-run home run. After Ryan Hanigan walked minor leaguer Alex Bucholz fought off some pitches and tied the game with a triple. That's where the game endec.

"We came out pretty much unscathed which is what you want. It was a heck of a game today. That kid (Alex) Bucholz that was the at bat of the spring right there. You like to see a young kid come up and battle.and battle and battle like that. That was worth its weight in gold. Now that's time to do the real thing," Dusty Baker said to cap off the camp.

New Red in Bullpen

Logan Ondrusek looks like he should be playing in an NCAA game. He is every bit of the 6'8" as stated in the Reds media guide.

On the day of the Final Four, Ondrusek will be in a Reds' uniform for opening day.

The righthander came up big on the mound in Goodyear. He pitched in six games and did not allow a run in 9 1/3 innings.

He was drafted in the 13th round in 2005 out of McClennan Community College in Waco, Texas. He is a 2003 graduate of St. Pual High School in Shiner, Texas.

Last season he pitched in three levels in the minor leagues. The 25-year old gave up just 12 earned runs in 72 innings with a 4-1 record and 19 saves combined.

"Ondrusek rose through the organization last year and dominated at every level," Jocketty said. "He was that way this spring. He handled himself like a pro without having a lot of experience. He was very impressive."

Mike Leake Makes the Reds

without pitching an inning in the minor leagues.

"There are no words to describe the feelings," Leake said. "Maybe in a couple days."

The 22 year old right handed pitcher from Arizona Sate University outlasted Travis Wood, who had an impressive spring and Aroldis Chapman, who defected from Cuba, to win the job.

Chapman had a lower back spasm that put him a little behind.

Leake will start as early as April 11, when the Reds will first need a fifth starter.

A Glorius Day In Goodyear

unless you're among the 13 Reds who are finding out that they will not be in Cincinnati come Sunday.

As I write this Dusty Baker has notes on a yellow legal pad to make the cuts.

"It is unpleasant but its necessary," Baker, who dreads this day, said on Thursday.

"I remember what it felt like. You want to be as honest as you can but you can't tell them everything."

For those that make the team it will be indeed a good Friday.

Texas at Cincinnati

While the Reds decide, who will crack the roster as the fifth starter, incumbant Johnny Cueto had a rough start against Texas.

He gave up five runs on 10 hits in four innings. Julio Borbon had three hits off Cueto, including a home run to lead off the game.

Scott Rolen and Wladimir Balentien hit home runs for the Reds.

After losing a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth when a minor league outfielder misplayed a fly ball into a game-tying triple.

Danny Dorn hit a two-out home run to give the Reds a 7-6 win.

Viva Las Vegas

The Reds played a game in Las Vegas on Wednesday night against the Las Angeles Dodgers.

As the correspondant for MLB.com, I visited Cashman Field, hard by Fremont Street in old Vegas. I took in the Fremont Experience an outdoor video show displayed on a roof of neon that covers four blocks of Binions and the Golden Nugget.

We stayed at the Nugget. I couldn't help checking the sports book to check out what the oddsmakers thought of the Reds chances

Cincinnati is a 6-1 shot to win the NL Central, 20-1 to win the NL Pennant and 30-1 to win the World Series.

One who has the odds in his favor to win the fifth starters job is Travis Wood.

Wood, the Reds second draft choice in 2005, started against the Dodgers.

Once the longshot in a six-man field that included, Aroldis Chapman and Mike Leake.

Chapman was a favorite, having signed a $10 million contract and throwing at more than 100mph. Mike Leake was the first draft choice last year and has pitched at a high collegiate level.

Chapman had a sore lower back that set him back to the point that he won't be available physically. The Reds management is also concerned that culture shock could distract him.

Wood has advantages over Leake. He has worked in a e man rotation during his career.

He is lefthanded. "You prefer to have a lefthander.if you can find them," Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker said. "But you'll take any hander if he's pitching well."

He is already on the Reds 40-man roster.

"Our whole organization is wrestling with this every day. Leake has performed well. There haven't been many guys that can do it (go from college to the major leagues) but there have been some. There is also the problem that he's not on the roster and you have to move someone off the roster. Wood is on the roster.'

Wood retired the first five Dodgers. Then, he walked three straight.

Pitching coach, Bryan Price came out to visit.

The message was to relax, stay on point and throw strikes. He escaped the inning unharmed.

"I started out strong," Wood said. "I hit a lull that I had to battle through."

"He threw the ball good tonight. He had periods where he was overthrowing. He's trying so hard to make the team. When he was around the plate his stuff was electric," Baker said. "We know his control is better than that. There is a lot more in him."

"I
